I'll Be Missing You

Beloved Texas Governor Ann Richards died this week, and I cried. She embodied so much of what is good about Texas and what is good about women, and she was just an awesome woman. She was even on an episode of King of the Hill!

Then last night we were watching The Simpsons and Troy McClure was on. We looked at each other and said, “We miss Phil Hartman.”

There are other celebrities I will be sad never to see again. John Spencer from The West Wing.

John Ritter – not that he was a great actor or anything (maybe he was) but he always made me smile, even as Buffy’s mom’s creepy boyfriend. Plus his death was so sudden.

Princess Di. I won’t say more at the risk of bawling.

Mark Frankel – I had such a crush on him when he was Gregory Orloff in Young Catherine.

What celebrities do you miss?

Steve Irwin.

Can't say more without bawling, and how sad is that?

Princess Di -- I remember how unreal it was when she died.

John Ritter -- My DD misses having new episodes of Clifford (John did Cliffords voice).

I can't think of more off the top of my head, but as soon as I post, I'm sure I'll come up with a bunch!

Princess Di for sure. Steve Irwin. John Ritter. John Candy.

I miss Jim Henson. :-(

And remember Jon Erik Hexum? What a waste.

And that guy who played Ares on Xena. He was too hot to die young.

Chris Farley, too. Not hot, but too funny to die young.

John Ritter definitely. And I don't know who Mark Frankel is but he sure looked good so I miss him too. And Phil Hartman, John Candy, John Spencer, Terry Fox, Pierre Trudeau and Jim Henson.

Oh my god - Jon Erik Hexum! I nearly wrote him down but then thought, nah no one will know who I'm talking about. Too funny Michelle!

I think everybody's covered all the people I'd name.

Ares on Xena -- Kevin Smith. Him I miss. John Belushi -- what would he be doing? Gilda Radner. John Lennon. And yeah, Ann Richards. What a woman.

Yes, I always admired Ann Richards. I was so shocked to hear she had died. And I so enjoyed Roddy Stinson's column in the Express News because Ann Richards was always making him mad.

I read recently online this week that someone asked her what more would she have done if she knew she would only serve one term as governor. Typical Ann, she said that she would have raised more hell.

Go Ann!

Lupe

Others that I'm sad that they're not here anymore are Jimmy Stewart, John Ritter (he was so versatile, he was a minister in the 'Waltons' for goodness' sake! and he played a great dad in various shows), Don Knotts (loved him in the old 'Andy Griffith' episodes) and Lucille Ball (I wonder what she would think of what passes for comedy nowadays).

I will miss Miz Ann...she was the epitome of what a real Texas woman is or at least can be.

When I was a child, I idolized Robert Kennedy. He was my hero. I miss him, and wonder often what could have been if that day in June 1968 hadn't occurred.

Kurt Cobain (but you knew this, Mary). I LOVED Nirvana with the white-hot fiery passion of a thousand suns.

Definitely Phil Hartman and Chris Farley--no one did physical comedy like Chris Farley.

My husband misses Octavia Butler. I haven't read her yet, but an African American FEMALE sci-fi writer? You had to just love that she broke those barriers.

I'm going to be too, too cerebral for a moment--Wendy Wasserstein. She wrote one of my favorite plays, Uncommon Women and Others, and she'd just released her first novel. It was so sad that she went so soon.

Dana and Christopher Reeve. So sad. Those two make me cry when I think of their son.

Oh, I remember Jon-Erik Hexum! My mom and I both cried when he died! He was gorgeous and had the greatest voice.

And John Lennon - my mom cried when he died, too. I saw Sean in Rolling Stone - he's THIRTY! How old am I???

Mark Frankel was in Sisters and The Kindred, which was on FOX when it was a new network. Died in a motorcycle accident. But my buddy Denise and I were so crazy about him in the Young Catherine miniseries, about Catherine the Great.

I forgot John Ritter was on The Waltons! Goodness!

I love the Ann Richards quote!

Yes on Chris and Dana Reeves - their poor son!

And yes on John Belushi!

Robert Kennedy, huh? Funny, because I idolized John! I knew EVERYTHING about the Kennedys when I was a kid. Every biography I ever did was on JFK. I wonder what difference those boys would have made in the world.

Oh, I remember clearly the day Kurt Cobain died! I remember feeling bad for his daughter, and I remember all those people out there.

I'm ashamed to say I don't know the writers you're talking about, but I miss Anne George. She wrote these hilarious cozy mysteries about 2 elderly sisters. I love those books!
