Spreadsheets

So I'm taking this online class on how to write 50 books in a year, and all these people are talking about the spreadsheets they use to keep track of the number of pages they write. They're uploading them to the file section and I'm looking at them, thinking, TOYS.

Donna Caubarreaux's is the only one I can find online. The one I used to use was from Kresley Cole, but I don't see it on her website anymore.

Essentially, you set a starting date and an ending date, the size of the book, and these trackers will keep track of how many pages you need to write a day. On mine, if I reached the goal, it would have a little "You go, girl!" kind of message pop up. If I didn't, it would admonish me to get cracking.

It works pretty well on a new story, if you're trying to, say, get a book done by the GH. Not so well on revisions, and maybe that's why I've gotten away from it.

Do you use page counting software? Do you use a calendar? Do you even keep track of how many pages you write?

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go watch another episode of Prison Break. I had to go RENT disc 4 because I couldn't wait till after Labor Day weekend!

I also rented Zodiac, too, just because Justin's in it.

My goal is 2000 words a day, five days a week. I use the word counter to keep track, to see if I hit the 2000 words. I don't stop until I see it happen! That's how I finally finished SEVEN OF CUPS this summer, despite everything else going on.

I have the one from Kresley Cole, Mary, if you want it again. Send me your email at Marianne@mariannearkins.com and I'll get it to you.

It really does help!

Thanks, Marianne. I found it on my hard drive.

And The Zodiac? What a crapfest. How can a movie about a serial killer, even one who hasn't been caught, be boring???

My eyes are crossing. You girls are all too organized for me.

Elisabeth, you're pretty productive - do you just write and not keep track?

Err...my page tracking device is my critique group. I refuse to go to a meeting without at least a chapter every week. Which means that usually on critique group day, I'm hunched over the computer pounding away, determined to write something for that night's meeting.

LOL.

I used to use Kresleys but i've gotten to where I just update the bars on my blog instead (weekly). I feel less pressure like that but I need some accountability.

Page-counting bars scare me. I'd get all freaked out about how many pages I had left, instead of celebrating what I've done. Like now. I'm freaking out now just at the mere thought of counting my measly progress for the day. ACK!

I LOOOVVVEEE Kresley Cole's tracker!

It's no simple spreadsheet. It does calculations galore, with deadlines and pages-per-day to meet that deadline, and it tells you exactly how much you did without you having to figure it out.

I use it for EVERY project and it keeps me solidly on track.

I wonder why Kresley doesn't have it on her website. And how did so many of us find out about it?

Colleen, how many pages does your critique group want? Does it vary? Every week? No way....
