Lolcats and funny pictures

That is such a CUTE kitty picture.

Last week my principal brought in the Kindle she'd bought for her dh for show and tell. She wasn't too familiar with it, so I played with it a bit. I was annoyed by the flash--the screen goes from beige to black when it's turning the page, but everyone I've heard some say they don't notice it. I accidentally turned on the wireless network and couldn't figure out how to turn it off, and I kept trying to touch the screen. I liked how thin it was, and I'm sure I could get used to it.

I tried the Sony e-reader at Borders a few weeks ago and also didn't like the flash. Also, I understand the Sony store is a pain to negotiate and you have to plug your reader into the computer to download the books, as opposed to wireless delivery with the Kindle and Nook.

So to complete my research, I went to Barnes and Noble and looked at the Nook. Okay, I really liked it. It seemed more intuitive, and while it had the flash, it wasn't the delay I'd been led to believe. It was pretty simple to figure out, and well, if I had to pick one now (not likely--WAY down on the list) I'd pick this one.

For now the iPhone is my favorite. I've read three books on it this weekend!
I find it way easier than reading paperbacks, probably because of the backlight and the adjustable font.
Do you have one? What do you like about it? What don't you like?

I've been watching MERCY, since Oxygen had a marathon last week. I really like the show, which is about a nurse who is an Iraq war vet who had an affair with another doctor over there. She's come home to make a fresh start with her husband, and the doctor from Iraq followed her. After three episodes in a row yesterday, my Tivo froze, an overload of estrogen, I guess. Still, I like this show.

I have 5 episodes of Chuck to watch and The Good Wife from last week. I like the show but always hesitate to watch it because it can be a downer.

Tonight is new Castle, and Leverage comes back this week. Anything else new?

I really like the Good Wife. Its one of my favorite new shoes. Mercy is good too - plus it has two hometown boys starring in it with James Tupper from Halifax and the nurse's hubby from Pictou County. Right now I'm watching True Blood Season 1 on DVD and really loving it.

I LOVE my Nook ... LOVE LOVE LOVE. It's actually easier to read than a paperback, and I never thought I'd say that. I may never buy a paperback again (except ... yanno... the autographed ones from my friends *G*).

I've only just started to watch "Leverage" ... I've heard good things about it.

Kelly, I got hooked on True Blood this summer on DVD. I bought the first season after Christmas and loaned it to another teacher and now SHE'S hooked!

James Tupper is the reason I started watching Mercy. He's the one from Men in Trees, right?

Marianne, I feel the same way, though I have a couple hundred paperbacks still. It's so much easier to read on the iPhone. Once I read through those paperbacks, though, I'm getting a Nook.

I have to admit, the screen flicker (which is caused by the removal of the e-ink and laydown of new e-ink--it's not pixels, so it can't change like digital stuff does) doesn't bother me like I thought it would. It only takes the amount of time it takes my eyes to go from the bottom of the page to the top. I've found it easier to sink into the story than I expected, too.

But the only time I find it easier to read the Kindle than a book is when I need to put it down. Then I just need a finger to turn the page, and it stays "open." That's super-nice (unless there's a glare, which there always is unless I'm positioned just right to the light).

Holding it isn't comfortable most of the time (though it's not UNcomfortable, until I've been reading for a while). It's way heavier than mass market paperbacks are, and my fingers cramp because I can't support it the way I do paperbacks. It's easier now that I have a cover, oddly, because there's more "grippage" area (there isn't really much space on the front of it to brace a finger without hitting a button!), but that adds weight.

I only spent a few minutes with the Nook, but I found the navigation confusing and annoying. The Kindle navigation has been easy-peasy. :)

What a bummer that it's not comfortable to hold! It didn't feel too bad for me, but I only played with it about 10 minutes. I accidentally turned on the WiFi and couldn't for the life of me figure out how to turn it off. And I never did see how to make the font bigger. On the Nook, I found it right away.

I'll stick with my phone then :) It's light and ALWAYS with me ;)

RE: comfortable to hold--it might just be a case of "newness." Not all books are comfortable to hold, either, especially if I can't crack the binding right or the print goes too far into the center, but I've been doing it for 35 years, so I'm used to it! LOL

The button for the font size is on the keyboard. One click, then you use the cursor to select the size you want, and voila. It's also got a very easy user guide. Two minutes with that when you first start using it, and you know everything you need to know (like, hit menu, click down one line to "Turn Wireless Off," click enter, click "back"). :)

Which means...if I'd had a user guide when I checked out the Nook, it probably wouldn't have been so annoying. LOL

Oh! EW highlighted two new readers coming out this year that look like they might be even better than the Kindle and the Nook. I'm eyeing one for my husband, who's thinking about the bigger Kindle for newspaper reading.

I saw those e-readers in EW! The dh wants me to wait for the Apple Tablet, supposedly out this fall. But you know it will be expensive.

Yeah, of course! And it's been rumored for years, so you can't count on a fall release, either!
