Word of Mouth
I think of any business, the book business benefits from word of mouth. The first book I bought based on a friend's recommendation was Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. I scarfed that baby and the three after it right down.
I was looking at my TBR and marveling how large it’s grown since I started using the Internet. Word of mouth has had me trying books I never would have picked up otherwise.
Case in point, Mr. Impossible by Loretta Chase. It won some contest on AAR and so I got it. I’m reading it. It deserved the award.
I’m also reading Icebound, which Trish had recommended. It hasn’t gotten to the Antarctica bit yet, but it’s good.
I categorized my TBR pile by where I’d heard of the books and decided to give them a try. Here are some samples, or I’d be here all day.
From online reviews:
Medusa Rising by Cindi Dees
Rules of Engagement by Katherine Caskie
Michele Albert books
Sophie’s Last Stand by Nancy Bartholomew
Secret Soldier by Dana Marton
Books by people I’ve met online:
Catherine Mann’s books
Off the Map by Dorien Kelly
Tracy Montoya’s books
Primary Suspect by Susan Peterson
Carrie Alexander’s books
Karen Templeton’s books
Books recommended by blogs, message boards or email loops:
Gena Showalter books
Diana Peterfreund’s book
A Connecticut Fashionista in King Arthur’s Court by Marianne Mancusi
Bitten and Smitten by Michelle Rowen (okay, I read this already, but it’s a prime example)
Vickie Taylor’s Gargoyle books
Not a Girl Detective by Susan Kandel
Carpe Demon by Julie Kenner
Books recommended at RWA workshops:
The Price of Pleasure by Kresley Cole
Lisa Gardner books
What books are in your TBR and where did they come from?
The radar looks like someone dashed a lot of red and orange paint on it - I guess I won't be hitting the grocery store for a bit!

There are times I don't even look at my TBR pile. If I ignore it, then it's not there. Ok, that's lame. I have a huge walk-in closet in our family room that has shelves lined on the walls. This is were I 'stash' all my books. They are overly organized due to my OCD. :) My TBR pile is huge. I tend to take the top 4 or 5 and set them on my desk. From there... the reading begins.
I get suggestions from everywhere on what to read. By the time I get to the book, I forget who suggested it. :( Maybe I should categorized my TBR pile like you...
So many of them are by people I know. Others I've gotten as freebies at conferences. Others I've just picked out while browsing bookshelves. Others, like J.R. Ward's and Lori Handlelands paranormals, were suggested by a friend.
Dana, I know exactly what you mean - sometimes I get overwhelmed by my TBR pile - so much to read!
I read about 80 pages today, though. Felt good.
I have a lot of freebie ones, too, but I only keep the ones I like the blurbs on. I pass the others around.
Oh, and does no one else LOOOOVE this picture??
I LOVE that picture. Men and babies :)
I have no idea where these books come from. Library sales, second hand stores--at least that is what I tell my nearest and dearest LOL. Blurb, cover, fav authors. So many great people to try, it can be overwhelming sometimes :)
Most of the books I buy now are by the authors I know. Right now I have 4 books by Brenda Novak, 3 by Lisa Gardner (great, great reads) in my TBR pile. If only I had more time...
ACK mary I tried to email you and it bounced =(
Cece, do you have my gmail address, or my wordsmith one? I'm just using the gmail now - mfechter at gmail dot com.
Toni, I absolutely know about it being overwhelming. Then I go to the library and get MORE books!
Olga, I've read two Lisa Gardner's. Have at least two more in my stack.
