A Bit Bruised

My Samhain editor told me she wouldn't get to STTA, the book that I love, my small town story, until my edits for Surface were done. Well, she got to it. And she passed.

:::whimper:::

She didn't connect with the characters. So now I'm feeling a little off-kilter about my books. Hot Shot, Surface and Smoke were all written years ago, and had all been through a number of revisions before they were even submitted. So I'm feeling like I can't judge my own writing, which makes me wary to write today, which bums me out because I thought today would be a good writing day.

I know I'll be over this soon. I just haven't been hit this hard by an R in a while.

((((Mar)))) I know that feeling, wondering if you've "lost it", if what you wrote in the past is the best of what you have to give. But that isn't true. I know for SURE it isn't true for you. You have what it takes---you always have. I know the fear...I am trying to start a new project, and I am scared. Can I do this? Was my last sale just a fluke? Will I ever sell again, or is it over? On and on and on.

But what I know for sure is that we have written in the past, we are writing today, and we will be writing tomorrow. We can't "lose" it---it lives, inside us.

Hugs, Mary, and sincerest empathy. Man, do I know of what you speak. It doesn't seem to matter how long we're at it, or how many rejections we get, there are still some that hurt like hell. But don't let this get you down. Keep the faith!

LOVE your new blog look! It is fantastic!

Hang in there. Shake off the sting. It just wasn't the right book for that editor.

And I love the blog skin too!

First, WHOA on the new look! I love how different it is from the last one! :)

Second, congratulations on the blog anniversary.

Third, of course it hit you hard. You had a rhythm, a routine, and her pass shattered it. Threw you off. But note that she didn't tell you the book wasn't good, but that she didn't connect with the heroine. That could be an issue from her side, not yours. I mean, you can't get much more subjective than that.

And if it's not? If you didn't put enough depth and sympathy into the heroine? You'll figure it out, you'll fix it or make the next one better, and you'll be so, so glad for it. I had a few revisions for the book Nephele signed me with, and every book since then has had problems I've been struggling to correct. I've cried at her over my inability to "get" it. I still don't know if I have, because she hasn't read the whole book yet, but deep inside, I know I did, and I know things have turned a corner, and I'll be getting somewhere at last.

You'll get through to that (or equivalent) point. Don't stay down long. (I know you won't, you just don't!) And in the meantime...HUGS.

Oh man, I so know where you're coming from. I've had rejection after rejection lately and it makes me feel like I've lost the touch.

((((((((((hugs)))))))))))))

Hang in there. You can do it!!

Thanks, y'all.

J, I hope it lives inside me. It certainly feels alive ;)

Steph, I know you know just how I feel! I hope this new one is the one for you!

Thanks, Gina. I just love this book so much, why can't everyone? :)

Natalie, I know JUST what you mean about finding flaws after signing. That's why it's taken me so long between books...I kept seeing mistakes after Anne pointed them out in Hot Shot. And about the subjective...this new one was rejected for a subjective reason, too. Hm.

HUGS back, Marianne! There certainly is no magic formula, is there?

((Mary)) I get R's so often I've stopped commenting on them. Actually, maybe I never did. *frown*
Not sure why not. Hugs anyway. They suck.

Thanks, Toni! I'd stopped worrying about Rs for a bit, but I just loved this story so much, and then the R from SRS....not making me happy :(
