RWA Conference
I’m not going to Reno this year. I’ve gone to the RWA conference the last two years as a Golden Heart finalist, but I couldn’t justify the expense this year, not when we need a roof and a new kitchen floor.
I was fine with the decision. Yes, I would have liked to meet with Susan Litman, yes, I would have liked to meet with an agent, yes, the workshops looked good, but I can get the workshops for a fraction of the cost of the conference, right?
Now I’m struggling, though. The reason? I want to see my friends. Yes, I want to spend over a thousand dollars (not including travel) to hang out with my buddies. The WNP is going to Virginia City one day, meeting for dinner another (and I think breakfast on Sunday.) One of the WNP had asked me to sit with her at the awards ceremony, which was so amazingly touching. Then there’s The Golden Network party, the Death by Chocolate party, the get together in one of the WNP’s rooms.
WAHHHH!!!
I want to be there when my friends’ names are announced at the awards ceremony. I want to deafen someone else when their names are called as winners. (Anyone know how soon after the ceremony the winners are listed on the website?)
So, once I get those repairs done on my house, I’m starting to save for Atlanta. You heard it here.

Mary - you will SO be missed. Atlanta - I'm already getting excited!
:::WHIMPER:::
Mary, sorry you couldn't make this year. I know about expenses. The only reason I can attend is because I live in CA and it's not that far away. I won't being going to another RWA con, until it hits SF in like 2008. =)
I'm sure all your friends will miss you!
Kelly, that's what happened with Dallas last year. A 4 hour drive, easy. And back when gas wasn't an arm and a leg.
Having never been to NV, though, I feel like I'm missing out!
Mary--this is my first so it'll be an eye-opener. No awards and no book sales BUT so looking forward to it and meeting up with friends. There is always next year and God I hear you on house repairs--roof, driveway, decks rotten etc etc etc! :( If I hadn't booked months ago and had lots of airmiles it wouldn't be happening!!!
Toni, relax and enjoy yourself. My first conference was New Orleans, and I was so nervous. The highlight of that conference was meeting Nora Roberts. But try to take it easy and you'll have more fun.
Kim, LOL. I'm going to stuff away my tutoring money for next year. I figure at $15 an hour, 2 days a week....
Mary,
Don't feel bad. I'm not going to National either. So we can sulk together. :-)
Hugs,
Tanya
Tanya, didn't you final in the GH this year??? That REALLY stinks that you're not going.
Sigh! I can't go this year either since I had to repair the ceiling in my bedroom. It would have been my first conference as RWA NYC chapter president, but I just couldn't make the dough. Flying from NYC is hideously expensive and involved changing planes. I'm missing the Chick-lit party, hanging out with my friends, pitching to agents, the RITA's. I need a Gerry picture to cheer up!
Elizabeth, I'll keep you supplied with Gerry pictures while they're gone! Interesting that roofing concerns are keeping us both home.
My chapter pays the fee for the President to go, and pays for one night at the hotel, since the Pres has to go up early. I think that's pretty cool. They also pay the fee for Golden Heart/Rita finalists. Last year there were three of us!
Hey Mary,
Yeah, I did final in the GH this year. First time entering too. But I'm not too bummed about not going because I really don't know what I'm missing. Never been to National. LOL! Anyway, Janice Lynn is my stand-in so she'll have fun for me. :-)
Tanya
I know Janice! She finalled with me the first time. Part of the fun of finalling was getting to meet the lovely ladies I finalled with, and seeing some other friends. Really, I'm not a social person except at conference!
