Adding Urgency

WANT:
My editor wants me to add more urgency to DLB. Okay, my hero and heroine are traveling across Africa to rescue her best friend, who's been taken hostage by the same warlord who had kidnapped the heroine years before. As they're traveling, things go wrong, delaying their journey. How do I ratchet up the tension? Not sure how to add it without being redundant, you know? And I do see where the sexual tension falls off, as well.
What did you think of LOST last night?

Tension ratcheting often has to do with increased stakes. Killing people (not the hero or heroine) also can help. :)
I loved Lost! I didn't watch until last night, so I avoided blogs until now. I don't have much to say about the show, but I thought it was excellently done and can't wait for next week.
"Frogurt." Hee!
Okay, increasing stakes-can do that. This book has more flaws at the beginning than the end. Unusual for me.
I loved Hurley's comment to Sayid-"If you'd eat more comfort food, you wouldn't have to go around shooting people." But yes, very anxious to see this week!
