I Miss Contests

I miss contests. I miss the deadlines, the “notify by” dates, getting the packets back. Okay, yes, I still have three more: Duel, The Emily and the big ‘un, but I’m having serious withdrawal when it comes to printing, mailing, waiting. Sad, huh? But the good thing about contests is you always know when the wait is over. Not the same with submissions. But alas, I have no good motivation to enter contests anymore.

You can see the progress bar is inching (millimetering?) along. I am writing and it feels better. Reading Virginia Kantra’s RS really helped to see the romance/suspense thing. It had a hair too much lusting for me, but it certainly will be on my keeper shelf.

I did a Google search on Gerard Butler Bandwagon and would you believe Michele and Trish’s blogs came up before mine? Michele’s was on page 8 and Trish’s was on page 9 and mine was on page 10!

Mary, I know what you mean about missing the rush from contests - but maybe you can use them as a reward. You know,"if I make it to page 100 by this date, I can enter this contest." That kind of thing.

I miss them, too, but whenever I think about entering again, I remind myself that if I enter, in fairness, I'll have to start judging again. And that always cures me :-)

I like the way you think, Kris! As for judging, I didn't judge anything but the GH last year, so I'm making up for it this year - I've judged three contests and am waiting for the HEA contest!

Mary, I just entered 2 contests and judged GH this year and now I'll be on pins and needles when the announcements go out.

And the only reason I can think of that made my blog come up sooner on the Google search is I have a link to the GB.net page on my blog labled "Gerard Butler".

Mar, I am SO glad you are writing again and feeling better. That's important. I feel better now, giving myself permission to put my vampire story on hold and pursue another romantic "dark cozy" idea. I haven't felt the "zing" for work in months. Now I do. It's kind of like having static electricity in your blood...pretty good feeling. :)

I agree about your take on some books overdoing the lusting...I am getting really sick of that. It is simply not believable, and actually, sort of ridiculous. I've seen it handled so poorly lately. It's the major thing putting me OFF romance right now. I long for a romance that feels hot and real. Oddly enough, I'm finding it in cozies, because rushing the romance between the characters is actually a NO-NO in cozies. In Deb Donnelly's series, the relationship between her heroine, Carnegie, and Aaron Gold is one of my all-time favs. Wow! But the sex (which is never graphic in a cozy) isn't the feature, nor is all the internal drooling and "gotta get me some'a that" thoughts. Sex is hotter when you take it slow. So is sexual tension. Every book in the series makes you want more Carnegie and Aaron. Oh yeah.

I love my cozies.

I sometimes miss the high of finaling in a contest, but I think it's outweighed by the money and time I'm saving by not entering.

That said, I'll be jittery the whole day of the GH calls.

Good point about saving money, Trish! I spent over $400 last year, just in entry fees.

But y'all, it's like Donna Caubereaux heard me....she posted a list of upcoming contests!
